On Exurban Development

چکیده
In the US, exurbia, the rural areas beyond the sewer served suburbs, is being developed with attendant denial of habitat for many species. This paper shows how exurbia can be developed for housing at the same time as the urban area, so that development occurs in widely separated areas. Exurban development is characterized by the use of septic systems so the parcel sizes are larger than average suburban parcels. The paper shows that, even absent any land heterogeneity or amenity values, consumers with higher than average income or taste for land can advantageously settle far from the suburban boundary. The paper analyzes a new case for dynamic urban models in which the high taste for land agent is in limited supply. Such agents are shown not to have to pay their whole bid rent and hence have an added advantage in exurban location.

Habitat use by mammals varies along an exurban development gradient in northern Colorado
Exurban development, defined as residential development outside of cities and towns, occupies nearly five times more land in the United States than urban and suburban development combined. Understanding the effects of exurban development on biodiversity thus has important and wide-ranging implications for the planning, construction and stewardship of sustainable communities and surrounding rura...
متن کاملVisualizing the Uncertainty of Urban Ontology Terms
The concept of exurban is an example of a term likely to find its way into urban development ontologies. Many such terms are uncertain since there is no consensus of the exact definition of e.g. the boundary of exurbanization. In this research we focus on visualizing the spatial implications of the uncertainty in two existing definitions of exurban boundaries using empirical GIS data in Delawar...
متن کاملCryptic indirect effects of exurban edges on a woodland community
Exurban development (e.g., second homes) in woodlands spreads urban land use impacts beyond suburbs, but because exurban developments often retain many components of original ecosystem structure—such as a forest canopy rather than open lawn—their ecological impacts may be underestimated. Changes in seed-dispersing ant behavior prompted by exurban land use, such as edge avoidance, may pose delet...
متن کاملSpace Use and Survival of White-Tailed Deer in an Exurban Landscape
Exurban development is nonmetropolitan, residential development characterized by a human population density and average property size intermediate between suburban and rural areas. Although growth in exurban areas is outpacing that of urban, suburban, or rural landscapes, studies of deer (Odocoileus spp.) ecology in exurban areas are nonexistent. During 2003–2005, we studied space use (i.e., se...
متن کاملResidential location and the biophysical environment: exurban development agents in a heterogeneous landscape
Agent-based models offer a promising framework for analyzing interactions between agents and a heterogeneous landscape. Researchers have identified a complex of factors that influence exurban development, including demographic shifts and location attractiveness of natural amenities as a magnet to amenity-seeking migrants. Attractiveness is often defined in terms of local or on-lot amenities, in...
متن کاملForest birds respond to the spatial pattern of exurban development in the Mid-Atlantic region, USA
Housing development beyond the urban fringe (i.e., exurban development) is one of the fastest growing forms of land-use change in the United States. Exurban development's attraction to natural and recreational amenities has raised concerns for conservation and represents a potential threat to wildlife. Although forest-dependent species have been found particularly sensitive to low housing densi...
